How to Order Storm Bowling Equipment Without Making the Mistakes I Did

Running a bowling center means ordering a lot more than bar snacks and shoe rental forms. Balls, bags, gloves, wrist braces, jerseys—it piles up fast, and the orders aren't cheap.

I've been handling equipment procurement for a mid-sized bowling center for 7 years. I've personally made (and documented) 11 significant ordering mistakes, totaling roughly $8,600 in wasted budget. That's not a brag. That's my resume.

This checklist is for the people who order Storm bowling equipment—or any brand, honestly—for alleys, pro shops, and entertainment centers. It's the system I wish I'd had before the $1,400 weight mistake, before the bag-size disaster, before the 22 pairs of undersized gloves. Run through these steps before your next order, and you'll avoid the phone calls I had to make.

Step 1: Match Ball Types to Lane Conditions

This is the mistake I made first, and it's a pattern I watch other buyers repeat. Every center runs different lane conditions. Some houses oil heavier; some dry out by the second game of league night. Your ball order should reflect what your lanes actually do, not what the catalog cover shows.

So I ordered a case of them, thinking "it's popular, so it must work everywhere." That's not how hook rates work. Before you order, check your oil pattern. If your lane machine logs patterns (most modern ones do), look at last week's numbers. Then talk to whoever runs league nights. A solid mix for a busy center covers three categories: solid coverstocks for oil, pearl coverstocks for dry or medium-dry, and hybrid coverstocks for the in-between.

Step 2: Lock Down Weights and Drilling Specs

Bowling balls range from 12 to 16 pounds. You know that. What you might not know is what your bowlers actually need. In my first year (2018), I made the classic mistake: I ordered 48 balls and every single one was 15 pounds. My logic was that most serious bowlers throw 15. Except our Saturday open-bowl crowd includes seniors, kids, and beginners, and about a third of them couldn't handle 15 pounds. The result: $1,400 in restocking fees, a two-week delay, and a very awkward call to the distributor.

The fix is to check your lane usage data before you order. If you track rentals, you'll see the weight distribution across your customers. For a general-use center, a mix of 13, 14, and 15 pounds is safer than betting the whole order on one weight. If you're a league-heavy house, ask the league secretary for the weight range that actually registered. The data already exists—you just have to use it.

Drilling specs are the other half of Step 2. Unless you have an in-house driller, you need to send exact layout specs when you order. Pin placement, span, thumb pitch—these aren't universal. "Just drill it standard" is how a ball ends up in the return rack, unused. I'm not a ball driller, so I can't speak to the technical nuances of layout selection. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is: don't assume the driller knows your customer's hand measurements. Send the info first.

Step 3: Buy Storm Bowling Ball Bags That Actually Fit

Here's something I learned the expensive way: bowling ball bags are not all the same size. I know that sounds obvious. But the photos on a distributor's website make every bag look like it fits everything. In September 2022, I ordered 60 Storm bowling ball bags for a group of league teams. The spec sheet said "fits standard bowling balls." Standard bowling balls are 8.5 inches in diameter. Sounds airtight, right?

Step 4: Get Accessory Sizes Right (Gloves, Wrist Braces, Jerseys)

If you've ever ordered a batch of "one size fits most" anything, you know where this is going. Gloves and wrist braces come in sizes, and the size charts vary by manufacturer. We once ordered 40 pairs of bowling gloves and returned 22 because the sizing ran small. $450 gone, plus a shipping delay (of course, it was the week before our summer league started).

The fix: grab a sample from the actual batch and try it on staff who know their fit. Compare to the size chart, then order accordingly. Don't just trust the number on the webpage. Also check left/right splits. My league roster runs about 25% left-handed, but I've heard of centers that go higher. Don't guess—look at your registered bowlers.

Jerseys are a separate lesson. When you order team jerseys, a "medium" from one shirt manufacturer fits like a "large" from another. If league teams haven't committed to a single style, you'll be handling exchanges all season. Run a quick sizing session during league registration—a table with two samples, a tape measure, and a sign-up sheet. It takes ten minutes per team and saves you from the box of mismatched shirts in the storage room (we still have the box, by the way).

Step 5: Plan Shipping Before You Place the Order

Bowling balls are heavy. A 15-pound ball plus packaging runs around 17 pounds. Order 40 balls, and you're looking at roughly 700 pounds of boxes. I wish I had tracked shipping costs more carefully across our orders. What I can say anecdotally: freight for a 40-ball order from a distributor typically lands between $200 and $450 depending on zone and whether you're on a common carrier route. That's real money when you're counting margin.

  • Check whether the distributor ships commercial or residential. If your center doesn't have a loading dock, tell them upfront. That mistake cost us half a day when the semi couldn't back into the lot.
  • For small items—gloves, wrist braces, jersey orders—shipping is much cheaper. According to USPS (usps.com), as of January 2025, a First-Class Mail letter (1 oz) costs $0.73 and a large envelope (1 oz) costs $1.50. That gives you a floor for small accessory shipping. Balls themselves are way over the weight limit for First-Class, so those go ground carrier.
  • Ask about splitting the order. Sometimes combining balls and accessories into one order gets you a break on handling. Other times, the freight cost on the extra weight eats the savings. It costs nothing to ask for both numbers.

Step 6: Track What You Ordered (So You Don't Re-Order It)

This step won't win a glamorous sales award, but it's the one that's saved us the most money. We use a spreadsheet. Columns: ball type, coverstock, weight, quantity in stock, quantity sold, reorder threshold. Nothing fancy. It eliminated the classic mistake of ordering more because we forgot we already had 12 in the back room.

I hit "submit" on a 48-ball order in Q1 2024 and immediately wondered: did I order the right mix? I didn't relax until the pallet arrived and I could visually check the boxes. Then we added a physical stock count every quarter. A spreadsheet can tell you what should be there; only the count tells you what's actually there. 2. Forgetting that drilled balls don't come back. There's a reason suppliers ask so many questions before you order. Once a ball is drilled, it's practically impossible to return. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), product claims have to be truthful and substantiated—but that won't help you after 10 drilled balls are sitting wrong in the pro shop. Check the return policy before you order, not after.

3. Skipping the physical inventory check. Trust the spreadsheet all you want, but go look at the shelves at least once a quarter. We found the missing 14-pound balls purely because someone walked behind the storage rack.

4. Treating accessory sizing as an afterthought. Sizing mistakes have cost us more than any single ball order. Every time, it came from assumptions. Every time, a tape measure was sitting right there.

This checklist isn't the whole story. I still make mistakes—last year I ordered wrong jersey numbers and paid $210 to reprint (the vendor generously cut the rush fee after I admitted the error). But every ball, bag, glove, and brace we order now goes through these steps first. The process doesn't feel glamorous, but the efficiency is worth real money.
