Storm-Bowling Rescue: A 36-Hour Rush-Order Story from a Bowling Center

The Call

On a Wednesday in March 2024, 36 hours before a family entertainment center was supposed to reopen, the general manager called me. Her voice was calm, which is how I knew it was bad.

It wasn't flashy technology—just a spreadsheet with formulas and timestamps—but it did more than any promise of "we'll keep you posted."

A few lessons from that week:

  • Confirm specs, not just quantities. "Same product code" isn't the same as "same drill pattern."
  • Use old inventory for spares, not for safety decisions. Old bowling balls are fine. Old playground equipment from the 1970s is not.
  • Build a 48-hour buffer when you can. We got lucky; the crack in the timeline was still too tight.

This worked for us because we had backup vendors and a local technician. If you're a single-lane house with no network, the calculus might be different. And as of March 2024, these lead times were accurate—the market changes fast, so verify current availability before you plan a launch.

The question isn't "Can you make it work in 36 hours?" The real question is "What systems do you already have in place?" That's where the opportunity is. And honestly, that's the part I get paid to stress about.
